The life of a dive instructor in the UK

Being a scuba instructor in the UK doesn't necessarily mean spending every day underwater. For many instructors and PADI Pros,, it's something they fit around work, family and everyday life – teaching a few sessions a week and enjoying the opportunity to share their passion for diving.

A typical day might mean heading to the pool after work to teach an Open Water session, spending a Saturday morning with students or joining a group for a day or weekend of open water training.

There is preparation involved before getting in the water – checking equipment, planning the session and thinking about what each student needs to work on. But once you're in the pool, the focus is on teaching and helping people progress. This is where the strong feeling of satisfaction plays its part!

Seeing a nervous student complete their first underwater skill, watching someone finally master their buoyancy or helping a diver overcome something they have been struggling with can be incredibly rewarding.

Then there are the bigger milestones. Completing those final Open Water skills, making that last training dive and telling someone "Congratulations, you're a qualified diver", or "Well done for excellent skills on your Rescue course!".

For the instructor, it's a real sense of achievement too. You have watched that person develop from their first uncertain kicks in the water into a confident diver who is ready to explore the underwater world for themselves.

It isn't always glamorous. British diving can involve cold water, early mornings, rain and plenty of equipment to carry around! But you don't have to be diving every day to get the rewards of being an instructor.

For many part-time instructors, it's about a few sessions, a few hours in the water and making a real difference to someone's diving journey.

You teach, encourage and share your own experience. You watch people develop. and achieve a variety of qualifications and broaden their own knowledge and experience as a diver. At the end of the course, when you see the smile on a newly qualified diver's face, you remember exactly why you became an instructor in the first place.
