There are so many things for families to do over a weekend; visit the park, go on a bike ride, watch a film at the cinema to name just a few obvious choices. However, if you and your family are all qualified divers, the list of destinations and things to do becomes almost endless! Why not travel to the coast and do a day’s diving, followed by an afternoon exploration of the local area and a meal on your way home? All being certified also adds another dimension to foreign holidays.
Scuba diving lets your family get involved in nature and explore the world beneath the seas! Instead of parents trying to find time on holiday to fit a dive in, why not all scuba dive together?
From the age of 10, anyone can enrol on the PADI Open Water Diver course. The requirements are the same whether the student is 13 or 73 so everyone can complete the course elements at the same time and study at home together. There are a couple of restrictions with regards to depth for junior divers but there is more than enough to see in the first 12m of water!
For children who aren’t yet 10 there are still options available for scuba diving. 8-10 Year olds can blow bubbles in the pool with the PADI Bubblemaker course and then advance onto the PADI Seal Team course to further develop their skills. This is a great introduction to diving and will definitely pave the way for them completing their Open Water in a couple of years.
Although it sounds like a cliché, the life beneath the waves is at your fingertips. There is so much to see and the opportunity of being able to share this with children should not be missed. The range of PADI courses is extensive and I’m sure that no matter what reason everyone in the family has to dive, there’ll be a speciality of interest for all. If mum particularly likes taking photos then she could enrol on the Digital Underwater Photography course, for dad who is interested in marine life and corals; the Coral Conservation course is available. Whatever the range of special interests, I’m sure we would be able to find something to enhance your diving experience.
